Spring is peeking our all over! Won't be long before everything is in bloom. In our newest section - the Natural (or Green) Burial Section we have started the landscaping. Plots are now on sale in this section that has no chemical use in the maintenance or the burials. Check out our progress on this newest section.

The Royal Hatters of the Red Hat Ladies Society had their October meeting in a very unique way…they came to Ione Public Cemetery for a Halloween luncheon! At first some of the members thought this idea was a bit strange… who would want to go there for an event? But leader Marilyn Evans kept talking it up, and they all decided to give it a try. Evans contacted Cemetery Office Manager, Carole Meltzer and as Meltzer explained, “Cemeteries are not just for the dead but for the living”. The Cemetery invites groups to hold events there as long as it is respectful. The ladies enjoyed a pizza lunch provided by Paisano’s Pizzeria in Ione. After lunch, Judy Allen, Vice-Chairwoman of the Cemetery Board of Directors, led an historical tour of the more notable people interred at the cemetery. The Ione Public Cemetery has been in operation since 1850, and contains the grave sites of some of the earliest residents of Calaveras/ and Amador Counties. One headstone indicates the remains of the “First white child born in Ione Valley”. A noted actor and comedian, Albert Theodore William Courtright and his wife, Mary Jan “Jennie Lee” Courtright, a well-known actress as well (dating back to the silent films), are also interred here. Visitors may also find the headstone of Elizabeth W. Withington, who moved to Ione Valley in 1852. She won awards for her artistic works, some of which can be seen at the Huntington Library and the Amador County Archives. One might also happen upon the burial site of Nathaniel Cecil (“Nat”), who was born into slavery, but who was able to purchase his freedom three years after arriving in California. Also at the cemetery is William Sutherland, who at age 19 had quite an encounter with Joaquin Murrieta and lived to tell about it! Visitors are always welcome to tour this historic cemetery at 500 S. Church St., Ione with a “Self-Guided Walking Tour”. For more information on The Ione Public Cemetery and services available, or to hold your next event there, call 209-274-0274. The Red Hat Society is a playgroup for women created to connect like-minded women, make new friends and enrich lives through the power of fun and friendship! For more information on The Royal Hatters, call Marilyn Evans at 209-274-4065.
